Social phobia or social anxiety disorder is characterised by disabling fears of one or more specific social situations (such as public speaking, urinating in a public bathroom, or eating or writing in public) in these situations, a person fears that she or he may be exposed to the scrutiny and potential negative evaluation of others or that she or he may act in an embarrassing or humiliating manner, because of their fears. People with social phobia either avoid these situations or endure them with great distress. Intense fear of public speaking is the single most common type of social phobia, one of which Centres on performance situations such as public speaking and one of which is more general and includes non-performance situations (such as eating in public) people with the more general subtype for social phobia often have significant fears of most social situations (rather than simply a few) and often also have a diagnosis of avoidant personality disorder

  • Marked fear or anxiety about one or more social situations in which the individual is exposed to possible scrutiny by others, examples include social interactions (e.g. having a conversation, meeting unfamiliar people), being observed (e.g. eating or drinking) and performing in front of other (giving a speech)
