ODD

Oppositional defiant disorder is characterised by a recurrent pattern of defiant, disobedient and hostile behaviour towards authority figures that persists for at least six months. There are different shades of this disorder depending on whether those with the condition are angry, irritable, argumentative, defiant or vindictive. The first signs begin to show during childhood but it stays into adulthood in the case of around 10 per cent of those affected by it. Family discord, socio-economic disadvantages, anti-social behaviour among parents and genetics are considered possible triggers/sources for some people developing such tendencies.

Defiant, oppositional and hostile behaviours are characteristic of both oppositional defiant disorder and conduct disorder, although there are important differences between these two conditions. One common behaviour shown by people having this condition is the destruction of property.
